William Santian
William was born and raised in the heart of the Maasai Mara by semi-nomadic Maasai parents. From a young age, as he helped tend cattle and moved with his family in search of better pastures, William developed an intimate knowledge of the Mara’s diverse landscape. His early experiences sparked a lifelong passion for conservation and a deep curiosity about the natural world, particularly birds, insects, and reptiles.
In 1999, after completing his primary education, William began his journey in the hospitality industry as a night guard at a safari camp in the Mara. His curiosity and love for nature drove him to rise through the ranks, taking on roles as room steward, chef, wildlife spotter, and eventually becoming one of the region’s most respected safari guides. Known for his exceptional interpretive skills, William specializes in birding and tracking wildlife, offering guests a unique and immersive safari experience.
In 2019, William co-founded and managed Emboo Camp, one of Africa’s leading eco-friendly and sustainable tented safari camps in the Maasai Mara. Emboo Camp is celebrated for its commitment to sustainability, using solar power, innovative water recycling systems, and eco-friendly building materials to minimize its environmental impact. William played a key role in shaping the camp’s vision before stepping down in 2022.
Today, William continues to share his vast knowledge of the Maasai Mara and beyond, guiding guests through Kenya’s northern landscapes, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. Whether around a campfire or on a game drive, William’s storytelling and expertise in nature make every safari experience truly unforgettable.
